We offer a full range of small powerboat training from Transport Canada and International Accredited courses at Mill Bay Marina & Port Sidney Marina. These cover the requirements to become commercially certified as a small boat Captain here and abroad.

1. “Boating Basics” Course (This is an on-water course)

If you are a beginner to boating or need a refresher, join us for a 1-DAY introductory on water practical boating course. Taught by a Transport Canada Approved and Maritime Coastguard Agency accredited instructor.

What you will learn while on the boat:

  • Basic pre-departure checks

  • Weather info and how to read a forecast

  • Introductory to chart and electronic chart plotters

  • Docking and close quarters maneuvering

  • Standard collision regulations and rules of the road

  • Getting on a plane and operating at speed 

  • Anchoring and picking up a mooring

2. Powerboat Training Course (Small Powerboat and RHIB Master)

Transport Canada approved in lieu of Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate (PCOC)

3-day practical course with 1 day of theory work and 2 days on the water

2-day practical only course with online theory component that students are required to complete on their own to complete certificate.

  • Offered from Port Sidney Marina or Mill Bay Marina

  • Maritime & Coastguard Agency approved commercial license - International commercial standard for small powerboat

  • Course training boat is the Club YOLO Beneteau Antares 7

    3-DAY Course $1,075 / person + gst

    2-DAY Course $860 / person + gst (online theory to be completed on own time)

Additional Course Details:

A course designed to cover the requirements to meet the *MCA’s Small Commercial Vessel Code and the requirements for issue of an ICC based on Resolution 40 from the Economic Commission for Europe Inland Transport Committee Working Party on Inland Water Transport.

3. VHF Radio Course (ROC-M W/DSC)

ROC-M is a one-day course for Operators and Crew on pleasure and/or commercial vessels operating in Canadian waters, within 25 miles of shore.

This is required ticket for operating a VHF in Canada.

Topics Covered:

  • The use of a VHF Marine Radio

  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC)

  • Emergency Broadcasts and Alerts

  • Sending a Distress or Priority message

  • Radio procedures

  • Phonetic Alphabet

  • Weather Radio Broadcasts and frequencies

  • (GMDSS) Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, which includes DSC/VHF, EPIRBs and SARTs.

4. SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Course)

This SVOP course is a stand-alone course addressing the particular needs for some minimum standards of training for operators of:

  • Commercial vessels, other than tugs, up to 15 Gross Tonnage operating not more than 25 miles offshore.

  • Fishing vessels up to 15 Gross Tonnage or 12 meters overall length operating not more than 25 miles offshore.

  • Passenger vessels, work-boats, sport fishing charters.

This is a 26 hour course and is done in 4 days from 8:30 a.m. until approximately 4:00 p.m. (sometimes 4:30 or 5:00) each day. The course ends with a 50-question exam which if successfully completed gives you your certificate.

SVOP certificate holders will be grandfathered in to the new course once it has been approved. It is a 5 day course with modules.

COST: $695 / person + gst (includes the manual) . Parallel rulers, calculators and dividers will be provided on day 3 for use by the students. Anyone wishing to purchase the tools can so at class. Kits start at $55.00.

(Note: This course certificate qualifies under CSA rules as an Equivalent to the PCOC card. In other words if you already have this you do not require a PCOC.


5. SDV-BS , Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety, Formerly MED A-3

This SDV-BS course provides basic safety training for crew-members on:

  • Fishing vessels not more than 15 GT.

  • Small passenger vessels (up to 12 passengers), work boats, sport fishing charters.

  • All other Small commercial vessels not more than 15 GT, including passenger vessels, with un-berthed accommodation only, but not including ferries, on Home Trade IV and Minor Waters voyages.

This is an 8-hour course, Formerly known as the MED -A 3, done in one day. The exam is a simple 25 question multiple choice. You receive your certification upon successful completion. 

COST: $295 / person + gst (includes books)
